Before her husband, President Donald Trump, entered the room, first lady Melania Trump received a very warm welcome from State of the Union attendees.
She donned an all-white suit with a sleek silk top and as she made her way to her seat, the crowd was on their feet.
Various cheers and whistles could be heard throughout the room, which continued even after she reached her seat.
Seated in the first lady’s box were 15 distinguished guests. The invitees included Elizabeth Alvarado, whose daughter was killed by MS-13, and retired Cpl. Matthew Bradford, who re-enlisted in the Marine Corps after he sustained an injury caused by an IED that resulted in the loss of both his legs and his eyes.
Melania broke with tradition and opted to ride to the speech with her guests instead of her husband, the president.
The first lady’s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, told CNN that she decided to accompany her guests to honor them for “the true heroes they are.”
Grisham added that when they arrived at the Capitol, Melania Trump and second lady Karen Pence hosted an intimate meet-and-greet to “engage with them on a personal level prior to the speech.”
CNN reported that Melania Trump will join her husband after the speech and the two will return to the White House together.
