For the Second Year in a Row, Melania Is Welcomed to the SOTU with a Standing Ovation

Arriving at her husband’s second State of the Union Address, First Lady Melania Trump was welcomed into the House chamber with a standing ovation and overwhelming applause from those in attendance.

The first lady traveled to the U.S. Capitol separately from President Donald Trump and arrived wearing an all-black ensemble — a stark contrast from the white outfits many Democratic women in Congress were wearing as a nod to the suffragette movement.

When she entered the chamber, the audience went wild for the second year in a row as she smiled and waved.

After the president took the floor, he introduced her to the chamber again and she was met with another round of applause and a second standing ovation.

Trump continued her own tradition by embarking to the event without the president once again, something that sets her apart from previous first ladies.

Last year, she similarly chose to ride with her special guests to her husband’s speech rather than depart the White House alongside him, drawing scrutiny towards her marriage amid reports of the president’s alleged affair.

According to the Washington Examiner, she wanted to “ensure her guests have a special evening.”

She personally escorts them to the Capitol so they can visit for a while and to ensure they feel comfortable,” her spokeswoman told the outlet.

The first lady special guests honored her Be Best initiative by including 6th grader Joshua Trump, who has faced bullying over his last name.
