Melania Trump’s Inauguration Day Outfit is a Clear Nod to a Beloved Former First Lady

Immediately, fashion aficionados and history buffs alike were able to recall a similar Inauguration Day ensemble.

In 1961, Jacqueline Kennedy wore a powder blue dress for her husband’s Inauguration — complete with a blue pillbox hat.

However, Mrs. Trump’s dress may be more than a simple nod to a fashionable former first lady.

Mrs. Kennedy was an outspoken promoter of the arts and historical preservation, and her multilingualism — she was fluent in French, Spanish, and Italian — endeared herself to the public when she accompanied her husband on trips overseas.

John F. Kennedy once joked to a crowd in Paris:

“I do not think it altogether inappropriate to introduce myself… I am the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris, and I have enjoyed it.”

Mrs. Trump, similarly, speaks several languages: her native Slovenian, English, and reportedly Serbo-Croatian, French, Italian, and German.

Though her powder blue coat may say otherwise, Mrs. Trump has not yet commented on whether or not she will use her language skills to aid her husband in his presidency.
