“Late Night with Seth Meyers” caught the ire of many on the internet after the show posted a tweet during President Donald Trump’s Oval Office address that appeared to be mocking the deaths of Americans at the hands of illegal immigrants.
Trump discussed the brutal murders of several Americans whose lives were ended by someone with no legal right to be in the country.
Among those discussed was police officer Ronil Singh, who was allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant.
The president said:
“America’s heart broke the day after Christmas when a young police officer in California was savagely murdered in cold blood by an illegal alien, just came across the border. The life of an American hero was stolen by someone who had no right to be in our country. Day after day, precious lives are cut short by those who have violated our borders.”
Trump also detailed more gruesome murders, describing the deaths of three other Americans in heartbreaking detail. Trump stated:
“In California, an Air Force veteran was raped, murdered, and beaten to death with a hammer by an illegal alien with a long criminal history. In Georgia, an illegal alien was recently charged with murder for killing, beheading, and dismembering his neighbor. In Maryland, MS-13 gang members who arrived in the United States as unaccompanied minors were arrested and charged last year after viciously stabbing and beating a 16-year-old girl.”
Because of the violent details, the show took to Twitter and joked that Trump had turned his speech into an episode of “Law & Order: SVU.”
Is this Oval Office: SVU?

This joke didn’t land well for many. Several took to Twitter to remind the show that these are real Americans who died instead of prime material for a joke:
just wondering if there was anything less funny than seth meyers – turns out, it's his twitter feed. https://t.co/rwISQW10oh

I know you earn a living by playing make-believe — but try and muster a measure of decency for the families of the dead – you sick fool. https://t.co/j44Ams3Sng

As usual they know no bounds… Those murdered by illegals who have multiple felonies and deportations are just a punch line to these lib clowns. Such a disgrace. https://t.co/Kb7ICr9tJL

I’m sure that’s hysterical to the families of the murder victims the president just discussed. https://t.co/XOOWeWZMSp

As for the rest of Trump’s address, he detailed the logic behind his request for wall funding. Democrats, on the other hand, made their case for reopening the government. It isn’t yet clear which message resonated with the American people and what impact, if any, these speeches will have on the negotiations between the White House and Democratic leadership.
