Former Democratic Macomb County Prosecutor nominee Christina Hines announced a bid Monday to represent Michigan’s 10th Congressional District in the 2026 midterm elections.

Hines declared her candidacy in a post on X, stating that she “understands the challenges that American families face every day.” Hines’ candidacy announcement comes after she lost her bid to unseat Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido in November 2024, with Lucido notching 56.91% of the vote to Hines’ 42.66%.

“As your next Congressperson, I will champion common sense issues like lowering costs for working families, fighting against big tech and social media programs that hurt our kids and serving everyday citizens by protecting our lake, our base, and our businesses right here in southeast Michigan,” Hines added.

“Christina Hines is jumping into a competitive primary that is certain to be a fight to the far left to stay relevant,” National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Spokesman Zach Bannon told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “While Hines promotes radical, out of touch policies, John James will continue to deliver commonsense results for the people of Michigan.”

Hines states on her campaign website that she plans to “fight against big tech and social media programs that hurt our kids’ mental health and wellbeing” if she is elected, also vowing to find “new ways to combat the ever-challenging fentanyl crisis.” The Democratic candidate also claimed on her website that she will “fight for everyday American families like mine by lowering costs and bringing good-paying jobs to our district” if she is elected to Congress, according to her website.

Michigan’s 10th Congressional District is currently held by Republican Rep. John James, who won the seat in 2022 by less than half a percentage point. The incumbent secured his second term in 2024 with 51.1% of the vote, compared to Democratic candidate Carl Marlinga’s 45%.

Notably, House Republicans are aiming to flip 26 “vulnerable” House seats in the 2026 midterm elections. Democrats, however, are viewing James’ seat as a potential key pickup opportunity after the Republican announced Monday that he plans to vacate it to make a gubernatorial bid in 2026 to replace term-limited Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Alex Hawkins, a 30-year-old Army veteran from Rochester, announced in February that he also plans to make a bid as a Democratic candidate in the state’s 10th Congressional District race.

President Donald Trump notably swept all seven battleground states in the 2024 presidential election, including Michigan. Trump notched 49.7% of the vote in Michigan, while former Vice President Kamala Harris secured 48.3% of the vote.

Hines’ campaign and James’ office did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
