Mike Huckabee Faces Racism Accusations After Making a Joke About MS-13 and Nancy Pelosi

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee faced an onslaught of backlash after he made a joke on Twitter about House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) hiring MS-13 gang members to work on her campaign committee:

“Nancy Pelosi introduces her campaign committee for the take back of the House,” Huckabee tweeted with an image of what appeared to be MS-13 gang members.

His comments seemed to be a reference to when Pelosi defended undocumented immigrants after President Donald Trump described MS-13 gang members as “animals.” Some, however, interpreted his comments as referring to all undocumented immigrants.

On Saturday, many seemed to similarly conflate an attack on MS-13 with an attack on all undocumented immigrants.

Many responded to Huckabee’s comments by accusing him of being racist:

Also on Saturday, Huckabee defended his daughter, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, after she posted about how a restaurant asked her to leave because she worked for President Donald Trump:

“Bigotry. On the menu at Red Hen Restaurant in Lexington VA,” Huckabee tweeted. “Or you can ask for the ‘Hate Plate.’ And appetizers are ‘small plates for small minds.'”
