A devastating chain of events unfolded in Alabama over the course of a single day, leaving a family grieving the loss of both a young mother and her infant daughter.
According to the New York Post, authorities in Huntsville were first called to a home on April 22 after reports that a 4-month-old baby was not breathing.
First responders attempted lifesaving measures before rushing the child, Lotus McKelvey, to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined the infant died from complications related to traumatic internal injuries. Further details about the injuries were not immediately released.
Police said the child’s father, Mickele Kaipolai Ah-Nee, 34, had been with the baby when she stopped breathing. He was arrested the following day and charged with domestic violence murder.
Jail records show he is being held on a $250,000 bond.
Just hours after the arrest, tragedy struck again.
Molly McKelvey, 28, the child’s mother, died by suicide on the morning of April 23, according to her family.
The rapid succession of events left loved ones in shock.
“There really are no words for having to just first finding out the baby is dead and then the mother commits suicide,” Molly’s brother, Kristian McKelvey, told WAFF.
“It’s like a movie. You hear about this stuff on the news a lot and you just never think it’s going to happen to you, you know?”
Kristian described his sister as someone who brought joy to those around her.
“Molly was a really awesome little sister,” he said.
He also spoke about the loss of his niece, recalling her as a happy baby whose life was cut tragically short.
“She was the happiest little baby I’d ever seen, too. I won’t be able to ever see her grow old,” he told the outlet.
Molly was the mother of three children. She leaves behind two young sons, Orion and Micah, in addition to her extended family, including her mother and siblings.
The back-to-back deaths have left those close to the family struggling to process the loss, as they grapple with the sudden and heartbreaking turn of events.
