An MSNBC analyst theorized that President Donald Trump‘s call to lower American flags to half-mast after two mass shootings rocked the nation was tied to Adolf Hitler and white supremacy.
During an MSNBC, contributor Frank Figliuzzi speculated that the ending date of the president’s order of flying flags at half-mast in the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, — August 8 — had ties to Hitler, the Neo-Nazis, and white supremacy as a whole.
Figliuzzi said that the date the flags are supposed to return to full-mast when put into numbers is “8/8.” He pointed out that the number 88 has significance to white supremacy and the Neo-Nazis.
While he denied to “imply” that the president “did this deliberately,” he claimed that the White House is being ignorant of “the adversary” they face with white supremacists.
“So it’s the little things and language and messaging that matters. The president said that we will fly our flags at half-mast until August 8, that’s 8/8. Now I’m not going to imply that he did this deliberately, but I am using it as an example of the ignorance of the adversary that’s being demonstrated by the White House. The numbers 88 are very significant in Neo-Nazi and white supremacy movement. … So we’re going to be raising the flag back up at dusk on 8/8. No one’s thinking about this. No one’s giving him the advice or he’s rejecting the advice.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) website lists the number 88 as a numerical hate symbol, as it is used by white supremacists as code for “Heil Hitler.” The number 8 corresponds to the eighth letter of the alphabet H, and two of them together — 88 — create the code.
