House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) deflected a question regarding freshman firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez‘s (D-N.Y.) controversial remarks, instead claiming that Republicans will “misrepresent anything” a Democrat says.
While speaking at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor on Wednesday, Pelosi was asked for her thoughts on the self-described democratic socialist’s inflammatory remarks that compared migrant detainment facilities at the southern border to concentration camps and whether she has addressed with the freshman members “the power of their words.”
As IJR Red previously reported, Ocasio-Cortez claimed in an Instagram Live video on Monday that the centers used to hold migrants attempting to cross into the U.S. through the southern border were “exactly” like concentration camps.
The House speaker responded by saying that members of Congress “take responsibility” for their “statements” and that she “hasn’t spoken” to Ocasio-Cortez about her remarks before claiming that Republicans “will misrepresent anything” that members in the Democratic caucus say if there is even “one word” they can “exploit”:
“These members of Congress are — they come and represent their districts and their point of view, and they take responsibility for the statements that they make. I’m not up to date on her most recent one, I saw something in the news.
“But I — no, I haven’t spoken to her about that. I do have some comments to make to my caucus writ large about the political nature of how politically charged the atmosphere is, so understand that while the Republicans have no interest in holding the president accountable for his words, they will misrepresent anything that you say just if you have one word in the sentence that they can exploit.”
Watch the video here:
Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on her comparison, telling CNN’s Manu Raju that it is “universally non-controversial” to say that the border facilities are “concentration camps” and that the Trump administration’s holding of attempted migrants in the spaces met the “academic requirement for what a concentration camp is.”
Reminder that AOC literally brought up "Never Again" when talking about concentration camps in her Instagram livestream, which is a clear reference to Nazi Germany.

The freshman congresswoman also used the term “never again” in her livestream, a reference to remembering the atrocious actions of Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.
What Ocasio-Cortez failed to mention is that former President Barack Obama also employed the use of these facilities during his tenure in office, even facing a class-action lawsuit from the ACLU and the American Immigration Council.
Pelosi’s refusal to address Ocasio-Cortez’s comments is not the first time the speaker has tried to flip the script against Republicans after another Democrat’s controversial remarks.
As IJR Red noted, Pelosi and other top Democrats demanded President Donald Trump and House Republicans apologize to Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) for trying to “misrepresent” her comments from a recorded interview in which she claimed that she had a “calming feeling” when she thought about the Holocaust because Palestinians gave Jews a “safe haven” after the tragedy.
