House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi is confident that the Democrats will take back the House in next week’s midterm election.
“Let me say this: Up until today, I would have said if the election were held today, we would win,” she told Stephen Colbert on the Late Show Tuesday night. “Now I’m saying is, we will win, we will win, we will win.”
Pelosi’s confidence scared the late night liberal-leaning host, who implied he had similar hopes that President Donald Trump would lose the presidential race in 2016.
“Please don’t say that,” he told Pelosi. “Do you want to say that on Hillary’s fireworks barge that she canceled? Please, please, please don’t say that.”
Nevertheless, Pelosi maintained her confidence.
“We will win,” she assured. “We own the ground. We’re not yielding one grain of sand … We’re just walking precincts and if everyone votes, we’ll have an even bigger victory. The Democrats will carry the House if we have a bigger victory, the Senate, governorships. It’s going to be a great night for America.”

Even though Colbert felt like he “should sacrifice a goat or something to take the hex off of what you just said,” Pelosi’s confidence may not be misplaced. In almost every major poll, Democrats are most likely to win back the House, where Pelosi was once speaker.
However, Democrats’ prospects for the Senate don’t look as bright. Many major polls project the Senate will remain in the control of the Republicans.
In just six days, polls will give way to real results and Pelosi is banking on those results to go her way.
“When we do win, we will have, as we open the new Congress, we will honor the vows of our founders,” Pelosi remarked. “E Pluribus Unum, from many one.”
