Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed that President Donald Trump is immersed in a “cover-up” regarding a whistleblower complaint alleging that his administration tried to withhold the record of a July phone call between him and Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
While speaking to reporters on Thursday, Pelosi accused the president of engaging in a “cover-up” by his “actions” of allegedly withholding a whistleblower’s report claiming that Trump pressured Zelenskyy to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden.
“There are actions that are a cover-up,” said Pelosi.
The House speaker went on to say that when someone chooses to “hide” information that belongs in a specific electronic storage system in a place other than that, it “is a cover-up.”
“When you have a system of electronic storage of information that is specifically for national security purposes, and you have something that is self-serving to the president politically, and you decide you might not want people to know, and you hide it someplace else, that is a cover-up.”
Pelosi also said that she thinks the president has been a part of a multitude of cover-ups while serving in office, such as with him not complying with the House Financial Services Committee’s request for his financial records.
“The president has been engaged in a cover-up all along,” she said. “Why else has he been obstructing us in the courts, which have ruled in our favor?”
As IJR previously reported, the House speaker announced that she would be starting an impeachment inquiry into Trump regarding the whistleblower complaint.
Top Republican lawmakers in the House railed against Pelosi during a press conference on Wednesday, with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) blasting the House speaker as having “demean[ed] the office of the speakership” by announcing the impeachment inquiry.
