Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner made comments online about masturbating in portable toilets and praised explicit military restroom graffiti.
Platner, who has faced several controversies throughout his campaign, wrote in a March 2017 Reddit post about having to âjerk offâ when he sits in a portable toilet, according to Fox News. In March 2021, he also described an image of a penis inside a portable toilet while deployed overseas, calling it âbeautiful,â âengorged and veiny,â and moving âtowards its penetrative glory.â
âOh sâ!!!,â Platner wrote. âYouâve got the Hot Rod Câ from Manas!â
Platner has previously responded to his controversial social media posts by arguing that he was joking. Some of these posts showed Platner downplaying the severity of sexual assault and using derogatory remarks against rural white Americans, women and gay people.
âYou should read the comments in context. Itâs very clear Iâm joking,â Platner previously told Fox News Digital. âItâs called sâposting. Itâs when you argue with people on the internet and try to bother them. So, yeah, no, itâs very obviously not true.â
In 2019, the Senate-hopeful also mocked a wounded U.S. soldier in response to a viral video of him getting shot by the Taliban, according to the Editorial Boardâs Magdi Jacobs. He referred to Pfc. Ted Daniels, a 37-year-old father who earned a Purple Heart after being shot four times.
âThis video never gets old. Dumb motherfucker didnât deserve to live,â Platner wrote, according to Jacobs. âAt least his stupidity and fat ass wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt. Poor marksmanship on the Talibanâs part is the only reason this mouthbreather made it home, he managed to make every possible shit decision possible when it comes to small unit combat.â
Platner became the Democratsâ presumptive nominee after Maine Gov. Janet Mills ended her campaign in April as she trailed behind Platner in the polls. He received endorsements from independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
In October 2025, Platner expressed regret over a tattoo of a Nazi symbol and covered it up. He said he got the tattoo two decades ago and had no idea it had a link to Nazis.
Platnerâs campaign did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundationâs request for comment.
