Although Vice President Kamala Harris is leading nationally, the Democratic nominee is trailing behind former President Donald Trump among older voters, according to an AARP poll from Tuesday.
Trump is leading Harris by eight points among Pennsylvania voters over the age of 50, according to the poll. At the same time, Harris is narrowly leading Trump by two points at 49% and 47% respectively across the key battleground state.
In April, President Joe Biden was at a similar eight point disadvantage among voters over the age of 50, according to the poll. Biden had also been trailing Trump in Pennsylvania by five points, which Harris has since managed to regain.
Harris has managed to hold on to a core constituency with a 14 point advantage over Trump among Pennsylvania voters under the age of 50, according to the poll. Biden however, was still behind Trump by one point among the same voters.
Pennsylvania, which has the largest electoral count of all seven swing states, is a particularly consequential state for presidential hopefuls to win. Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral votes have helped 12 of the last 15 presidents secure their victories.
Both Trump and Harris are viewed unfavorably, with the Republican candidate at 51% and the vice president at 49% respectively, according to the poll. Biden boasts the lowest favorability rating of just 38%.
Trump however is the only candidate with a net positive job approval rating while both Harris and Biden are in the negatives, according to the poll. Half of voters, 50%, approve of Trump, while 45% approve of Harris and just 41% approve of Biden.
The AARP poll surveyed 1,398 likely voters across Pennsylvania from Sept. 17 to Sept. 24 with a margin of error of four percentage points.
