NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 06: AUGUST 06: New York State Attorney General Letitia James speaks during a press conference announcing a lawsuit to dissolve the NRA on August 06, 2020 in New York City. New York State Attorney General Letitia filed a lawsuit seeking to dissolve the National Rifle Association charging the organization as a whole as well as Executive Vice-President Wayne LaPierre, former Treasurer and CFO Wilson Phillips, Chief of Staff and Executive Director of General Operations Joshua Powell, and Corporate Secretary and General Counsel John Frazer with failing to manage the NRA’s funds and failing to follow state and federal laws. New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) will be running for governor in 2022.

In a video announcement posted to Twitter, James explained, “I’ve spent my career guided by a simple principal: stand up to the powerful on behalf of the vulnerable, to be a force for change.”

James reflected on her record as New York attorney general, saying, “I’ve gone after the drug companies for fueling the opioid crisis. I’ve fought for better conditions and transparency in nursing homes. I’ve sued the Trump administration 76 times.”

She continued, “I’ve taken action to divest our pension funds from fossil fuels. I’ve held accountable those who mistreat and harass women in the work place, no matter how powerful the offenders. I’ve fought for affordable housing and worked to eliminate the NRA.”

James tweeted along with the video, “I’m running for Governor of New York because I have the experience, vision, and courage to take on the powerful on behalf of all New Yorkers. Let’s do this, together.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul, who filled the role following former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) resignation, announced in August she would be running for governor.

“I fully expect to. I’ve prepared for this, I’ve led a life working in every level of government from Congress to local government, I am the most prepared person to assume this responsibility, and I’m going to ask the voters at some point for their faith in me again,” Hochul said.

She added, “But right now, I need their faith and their prayers and I need their support to make sure we get this right, and I’m confident they’ll see that I fight like hell every single day.”

Son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Andrew Giuliani, and Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) also announced they will be running for governor in 2022.
