Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams sent a letter to a federal judge Monday, pressing to expedite his trial on corruption and bribery charges.

Adams’s attorney, Alex Spiro, submitted a formal request to the federal judge overseeing the case, asking for the trial to begin on April 1, according to The Associated Press. Spiro pointed out the urgency of an earlier date, citing Adams’s right to a speedy trial and the need for an undistracted campaign season.

“An earlier trial date will ensure that Mayor Adams’s speedy trial rights are upheld, that the Mayor will be able to fully participate in his reelection campaign and that this city’s voters can be rid of the distraction of this misguided indictment as they hear from and evaluate the Democratic candidates for mayor on their merits,” Spiro wrote.

A federal judge scheduled Adams’ corruption trial for April 21, 2025, despite his defense team’s request to conclude proceedings before the June primary. Adams, who pleaded not guilty in September, faces allegations involving Turkish officials, with his lawyer warning of serious implications if the trial’s timing interferes with the mayoral race.

Adams was indicted on five federal charges in September. He was accused of accepting luxury travel and illegal campaign donations from a Turkish official in exchange for political favors. Adams pleaded not guilty and says he remains committed to his office, vowing to fight the charges while maintaining his responsibilities as mayor.

Adams’ office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
