Sadly, it’s a story that’s not too uncommon. A passenger aboard a cruise ship suddenly and mysteriously falls overboard and is lost at sea.
Tragically, that’s what happened to 32-year-old Reco Scott from Decatur, Georgia, and trying to make the most sense out of this difficult situation is likely his wife, Angelijica.
As Fox 5 Atlanta reports, Scott was reported as having gone overboard the Carnival Liberty cruise ship around 5 a.m. on Friday, April 7. The ship was headed from Florida to Nassau, Bahamas.
The United States Coast Guard then deployed a search for the man who was last seen 10 miles northwest of the Berry Islands:

According to Atlanta’s 11 Alive, it was initially believed that Scott fell overboard from the ninth deck; however, a statement Carnival Cruise Line released indicates that Scott may have jumped. WSB-TV reports other passengers claimed to have seen the young man jump.
In a statement reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Carnival Cruise Line spokeswoman Jennifer De La Cruz said Reco “was observed jumping from a cabin balcony” that morning. According to De La Cruz, the ship took immediate action once it was alerted:
“The ship’s command immediately turned the vessel around and began search procedures. We extend our thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
After nearly 29 hours searching more than 1,000 square miles, the Coast Guard suspended the search for Scott on Saturday evening just before 6 p.m.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Christopher Eddy, the search and rescue mission coordinator for the Coast Guard Seventh District command center, extended his sympathies to the Scott family:
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Mr. Scott during this extremely difficult time. Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make and it is made with great care and consideration.”
Although the circumstances surrounding Scott’s death are not immediately clear, the most distressing detail is that Scott was reported to be on his honeymoon.

A family member reportedly told Fox 5 Atlanta that the couple married a year ago and had just renewed their vows. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Angelijica and their children with expenses.
11 Alive reports that this isn’t the first time this Carnival Liberty cruise ship has lost one of its passengers.
In May 2013, 33-year-old Samantha Broberg fell overboard from the 10th deck of the same ship. A video captured the mother of four climbing on the railing before her fall in the Gulf of Mexico.
The search for Broberg was suspended after 20 hours.
The cruise ship carrying Angelijica Scott headed back to Port Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday.
