California Governor Gavin Newsom has once again proven that the only consistent thing about him is his inconsistency.
On Thursday, the governor distanced himself from his own taxpayer-funded press office after conservative commentator Ben Shapiro pressed him on a deeply controversial post from the official @GovPressOffice X account â a post that outrageously labeled an ICE-involved shooting as âSTATE. SPONSORED. TERRORISM.â
This is the verified, public-facing communications arm of the Governor of California. And yet, its posts often read like a high school burn book â or something scribbled in a spiral notebook by Beavis and Butt-Head. One such post even suggested former Trump adviser Stephen Miller resembled a member of Hitlerâs SS â a disgraceful jab that shouldâve never made it out of draft, let alone onto a state-run account.
But hereâs the kicker: when Newsom was forced to stand by that post on his own podcast â This Is Gavin Newsom â he folded like a cheap lawn chair.
Shapiro laid it out plainly: âYour press office tweeted out that it was state-sponsored terrorism, which, I mean governor, I just have to ask you about that. That sort of thing makes our Politics worse, and it does.â
Newsomâs response? Just one word: âYeah.â
Shapiro pressed further: âOur ICE officers obviously are not terrorists. A tragic situation is not state-sponsored terrorism.â
And again, Newsom caved: âYeah, I think thatâs fair.â
Letâs be crystal clear â this wasnât a casual post by some campaign intern. This came from the official voice of Californiaâs governor. And rather than back up the public message coming from his office, Newsom ran for cover. As of this writing, the tweet is still live. No retraction. No apology. No correction. Just silence.
This is par for the course for Newsom. Back in March, he told Charlie Kirk on the same podcast that letting biological males compete in womenâs sports was âdeeply unfair.â His exact words: âI think itâs an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that.â
But what happened next? Absolutely nothing. No policy shift. No statement. No executive action. Meanwhile, girls across California kept losing out on medals, scholarships, and roster spots â all while Newsom pretended to care on one show and sided with radical activists in courtrooms and press releases.
Now, heâs suing the Trump DOJ over protections for womenâs sports â claiming that barring biological males from female competitions causes âserious harmâ to transgender students. But what about the serious harm actually happening to the girls forced to compete against boys? Crickets.
This isnât leadership. Itâs cowardice wrapped in a $400 haircut.
Newsom wants to be all things to all people. When heâs with Shapiro, heâs a man of fairness and reason. When heâs with the activist class, heâs waving the flag of âinclusionâ no matter how much harm it causes.
What do we learn from all this? Two things stand out: if you work in Newsomâs press office, you shouldnât expect him to have your back, because heâll throw you under the bus the moment itâs convenient. And at a deeper level, Newsom appears to have no core convictions, willing to say whatever it takes to get through the next interview, podcast, or fundraising cycle.
Frankly, with that level of pliability, he might just be better suited to a career as a chatbot. At least then, someone could program him to tell the truth.
