Trump Announces Release of Three Americans Detained in N Korea: ‘They Seem to Be in Good Health’

President Donald Trump announced that three Americans detained in North Korea are on their way back home after U.S. administration officials concluded a meeting with leader Kim Jong Un on Wednesday.

Writing on Twitter, the president said that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is on his way back from North Korea with “the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting.” He added, “They seem to be in good health.”

The release of the American citizens is the latest result of warming relations between the U.S. and North Korea, and Pompeo’s meeting with Kim — his second this year — comes as Trump prepares for a planned summit with the North Korean leader in a historic shift in relations on the Korean peninsula.

In his tweets, Trump confirmed that a date and place has been determined for the summit, but did not reveal specifics. He went on to say he would be greeting Pompeo and the recently released Americans when they land on U.S. soil at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.

The president announced Pompeo’s latest trip to North Korea during his speech announcing his decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal.
