After news of former President George H.W. Bush’s passing rocked the nation late Friday night, former President Barack Obama paid tribute to the “patriot” in a heartfelt statement on behalf of himself and former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama.

“America has lost a patriot and humble servant in George Herbert Walker Bush,” he wrote in a touching tweet, along with the statement. “While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude. Our thoughts are with the entire Bush family tonight – and all who were inspired by George and Barbara’s example.”

The former president went on to honor the man who held the office of the president decades before him and expressed condolences to the “entire Bush family.”

“George H.W. Bush’s life is a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling. And he did tremendous good along the journey,” he wrote. “It’s a legacy of service that may never be matched, even though he’d want all of us to try.”

In addition to the Obamas, former President Bill Clinton and former first lady Hillary Clinton also paid their respects to Bush in a joint statement.

“Hillary and I mourn the passing of President George H. W. Bush, and give thanks for his great long life of service, love and friendship,” Clinton tweeted on behalf of him and his wife. “I am grateful for every minute I spent with him and will always hold our friendship as one of my life’s greatest gifts.”

President Bush passed away late Friday night at the age of 94 surrounded by loved ones in his Houston, Texas, home after serving his country for much of his life. As prominent Democrats remembered the former president kindly, so did President Donald Trump and Bush’s family and fellow conservatives.
