Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and members of her legislative team were caught in a pickle this week after she denied that a fact sheet about her Green New Deal resolution was released from her office.
As IJR previously reported, Ocasio-Cortez’s rollout of her long-awaited Green New Deal resolution was met with laughter after a fact-sheet about the resolution claimed that the longterm goals included replacing air travel with trains, renovating every building in America, and stopping cows from farting.
The claim from the fact sheet that was met with the most blowback was a claim that the Green New Deal could provide “economic security for all who are unable or unwilling to work.”
As the blowback grew, many noticed that Ocasio-Cortez’s website pulled the fact sheet altogether.

Although an archived version of the website showed the same document that was being mocked, Ocasio-Cortez’s Chief of Staff Saikat Chakrabarti claimed there was a “doctored” version of the FAQ circulating and that older versions of the bill had been “leaked” before admitting an “unfinished” version of the FAO was published “by mistake.”
There separately IS a doctored FAQ floating around. And an early draft of a FAQ that was clearly unfinished and that doesn’t represent the GND resolution got published to the website by mistake (idea was to wait for launch, monitor q's, and rewrite that FAQ before publishing).

Although Chakrabarti initially claimed that the details from the FAQ had been leaked, others noted that the document properties showed that Chakrabarti had published the document.
@AOC claims that at the Green New Deal FAQ was “an early draft” accidentally posted. Someone sent me the information from the PDF: It was created by AOC’s Chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti at 10:09. pic.twitter.com/c20uvdZEO3

Still, Ocasio-Cortez’s team made the rounds on the media telling reporters that the FAQ document was doctored or not sanctioned by her team. Robert Hockett, an advisor to Ocasio-Cortez, even went on Tucker Carlson to further push the lie that the document claiming the Green New Deal would pay people who are “unwilling” to work was not from her team.
Watch what happens when Tucker Carlson steps out of the conservative bubble and brings on an @AOC policy adviser who debunks all the conservative media lies straight to his face (spoiler: it doesn't go great for Tucker) pic.twitter.com/joDNXBBB7G

Even the Congresswoman herself took to Twitter to claim that she had nothing to do with the document, despite it coming from her website. She pointed to several documents that had actually been doctored and directed people to the text of the resolution, instead.
When your #GreenNewDeal legislation is so strong that the GOP has to resort to circulating false versions, but the real one nets 70 House cosponsors on Day 1 and all Dem presidential candidates sign on anyway https://t.co/BbHIn8cu0f

She was later forced to clarify that both doctored versions and a “draft version that got uploaded + taken down” are circulating online.

When I talk about the GND, this is what I’m referring to – nothing else. pic.twitter.com/N7cqZOvtaa

Many took to Twitter to call out Ocasio-Cortez and her team for attempting to lie about the document.
Here is @AOC retweeting an easily verifiable lie that her own Green New Deal doesn’t call for paying people unwilling to work. She deleted her own FAQ page, but’s still visible here: https://t.co/hO2Lsjw8sQ Anything to say @brianstelter? https://t.co/50Bg8x4JZH pic.twitter.com/hzaVdmdeZe

This is ACTUAL gaslighting! Hockett says that the Green New Deal did not include “economic security for all those unable or unwilling to work,” that this was in a "doctored document."
That was in the FAQ posted on @AOC’s website!

Ocasio-Cortez’s team has said that they plan to publish an official FAQ for the Green New Deal as the resolution moves forward.
