In a “60 Minutes” profile that aired on Sunday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) didn’t hesitate to label President Donald Trump as a racist. When pressed by Anderson Cooper as to why she believes that, she didn’t hold back.

When asked why she doesn’t talk about Trump often, the congresswoman called him a “symptom of a problem.”

“The president certainly didn’t invent racism,” she explained. “But he’s certainly given a voice to it and expanded it and created a platform for those things.”

Asked directly by Cooper whether she believes Trump is a racist, Ocasio-Cortez didn’t hesitate.

“Yeah,” she answered. “Yeah. No question.”

Pressed to explain further why she believes that, Ocasio-Cortez cited Trump’s rhetoric on immigration and a 2017 Neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia:

“When you look at the words that he uses, which are historic dog whistles of white supremacy. “When you look at the words that he uses, which are historic dog whistles of white supremacy. When you look at how he reacted to the Charlottesville incident, where Neo-Nazis murdered a woman, versus how he manufactures crises like immigrants seeking legal refuge on our borders, it’s— it’s night and day.”

The White House responded to Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks in a statement to “60 Minutes” slamming her “sheer ignorance” and touting the president’s work on criminal justice reform. The White House also said that Trump “… has repeatedly condemned racism and bigotry in all forms.”

Ocasio-Cortez also confronted the common attack from her critics who say she doesn’t understand how Washington works.

“I think it’s really great for people to keep thinking that,” Ocasio-Cortez explained.

“You want folks to underestimate you?” Cooper asked.

“Absolutely,” she fired back. “That’s how I won my primary.”
