During an appearance on MSNBC, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed President Donald Trump’s speech.
As IJR previously reported, Trump spoke out about his plan for stronger border security and the need for a barrier wall. Ocasio-Cortez passionately responded to the president’s rhetoric, saying that he was causing disunity.
“This is systematic; it is wrong and it is anti-American,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “And again, those women and children trying to come here with nothing but the shirts on their back to create an opportunity and provide for this nation are acting more in an American tradition than this president is right now.”
She also claimed that the president is forcing people to immigrate illegally.
“He’s fighting against almost every way that people can actually legally enter this country, forcing them to become undocumented and then he’s trying to attack their undocumented status,” said Ocasio-Cortez.

However, the president repeatedly said that the U.S. was proud to welcome those that come into the country legally, but the process is strained by those that try to bypass it for an easier option.
The progressive politician also claimed that the government shutdown was self-serving to the president and not an attempt to fix a broken system.
“The president has decided to hold the paychecks of everyday Americans hostage so that he can fulfill a campaign — I don’t even want to call it a promise,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “A campaign fantasy that a vast majority of Americans disapprove of.”
While Ocasio-Cortez did not cite a specific poll, many are generally severely unrepresentative of the entire country. She continued to use more polls and research without citing specific sources.
“Not only that, but in the actual address there was falsehood after falsehood and we have to make sure we get the facts straight,” Ocasio-Cortez. “Everyday immigrants commit crimes at a far lower rate than native-born Americans.”
Yet in order for those incredible people to be able to come to the country legally, there must be change to the current system.
