Omar Lands Herself in Hot Water with Fellow House Democrat After Continued Controversial Israel Comments

Representative Ilhan Omar is facing backlash again for comments she made about Israel, this time coming from a Democratic lawmaker.

As IJR has previously reported, Omar is well-known for making harsh criticisms against Israel and those who support them. Representative Nita Lowey called her out on Twitter Sunday, claiming that she was mischaracterizing the support, referencing a recent interview that Omar gave.

“Lawmakers must be able to debate w/o prejudice or bigotry,” said Lowey. “I am saddened that Rep. Omar continues to mischaracterize support for Israel. I urge her to retract this statement and engage in further dialogue with the Jewish community on why these comments are so hurtful.”

This started an online debate with Omar, who responded that she was only questioning the relationship with Israel, using the stereotype of dual loyalty as an example.

“Our democracy is built on debate, Congresswoman!” tweeted Omar. “I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committee. The people of the 5th elected me to serve their interest. I am sure we agree on that!”

She also claimed her diplomatic trip was proof that she fights for peace.

“Being opposed to Netanyahu and the occupation is not the same as being anti-Semitic,” she argued.

However, Lowey stood her ground, calling out Omar’s use of stereotypes.

“No member of Congress is asked to swear allegiance to another country. Throughout history, Jews have been accused of dual loyalty, leading to discrimination and violence, which is why these accusations are so hurtful,” said Lowey. “I believe we can debate important policy without using offensive, painful stereotypes.”

The interview that sparked this exchange happened at a bookstore in Washington, where Omar claimed that the anti-Semitic label that has been placed on her is shutting down debate.

“I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is O.K. for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country,” Omar said.

Keep in mind just who is raising complaints against Rep Omar, especially if they are Democrats. They take donations from pro-Isreal sources. Rep Nita Lowey took $71K from pro-Israel sources in the 2017-2018 range.

And we should all know, by now, that politicians do what donors want them to do for them! They don’t give them money without expecting a return. That’s not good business.

One can also be against the corrupt Israeli government & their policies without being an anti-Semite.
