House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will introduce a resolution to honor U.S. Capitol police officers for their service during the Jan. 6 riots.
During her press conference on Thursday, Pelosi appeared to be pointing out the footage of the riots being presented during former President Donald Trump’s Senate impeachment trial.
“This week, as you know, we have seen… it’s been such a sad time for us, but at the same time as we see what’s being presented, we also see the extraordinary valor of the Capitol police who risked and gave their lives to save our Capitol, our democracy, our lives,” Pelosi said.
She continued, “They are martyrs for our democracy… those who lost their lives.”

She announced she would be introducing legislation to award Capitol police officers with the Congressional Gold Medal.
“The service of the Capitol police force that day brings honor to our democracy. Their accepting this award brings luster to this medal,” Pelosi said.
She added, “We must always remember their sacrifice… We will never forget.”
During another one of her press briefings last week, Pelosi recognized police officer Brian Sicknick who lost his life following the riots, as IJR reported.
“Indeed Officer Sicknick is a martyr for democracy,” she said.
Pelosi explained, “When it came to danger in the Capitol, Officer Sicknick and the Capitol police, whom we are enormously grateful… put themselves between us and the violence, saving lives and defending democracy.”
Sicknick died of injuries he sustained during the violence. He later lied in honor at the Capitol and became the third officer to do so.
According to a House aide, Democrats will focus on the “terrible toll” of the riot as well as Trump’s “role in assembling, inciting and inflaming the insurrectionists” during the impeachment trial on Thursday,” as IJR reported.
