House Democrats are admitting their disappointment in the rebuttal from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to President Donald Trump’s Oval Office address.
“I haven’t spoken with one person yet who thought they did a good job,” one anonymous House Democrat told The Washington Examiner.
The Democrat also claimed that while Pelosi is a great choice for speaker, she might not have been the best choice for the rebuttal. Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) also spoke out, claiming that the whole situation was pointless.
“I thought the whole thing was kind of a waste of time … on both sides,” Yarmuth said. “You had to match stature with stature.”

A second anonymous House Democrat said that they felt the lawmakers were trying to match Trump’s tone.
“The speaker sounded better to me than the senator because I feel like he’s a little too personal,” the Democrat said. “To me, I think that we can’t out-Trump Trump. You should never even try. We should not stoop to personal attacks. We should not belittle him.”
As IJR previously reported, the rebuttal was slammed on Twitter for being awkward and disingenuous. While Democratic lawmakers are still attempting to stay strong through the government shutdown, the president has said that he will not compromise.
