Pence Makes a Surprise Visit to Join Sanders at Kids-Only Press Briefing on Take Your Child to Work Day

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders held a child-only press briefing on Thursday for Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day.

The children asked many different questions to the press secretary, most of them like “favorite color” and “favorite dinosaur,” according to AP reporter Zeke Miller.

He also said that “Sanders was asked about child separation policy by one kid. She replied Trump wants to ‘keep families together.'”

Although the briefing was supposed to be off the record, Sanders allowed journalists to report that she revealed to the children that the president will be speaking at the Air Force Academy graduation next month and that NASCAR driver Joe Logano would be visiting the White House.

There was even a surprise appearance by Vice President Mike Pence to meet the children and encourage the group. When asked about vacation days, Pence told the children, “We work with a president who never stops working.” One child responded, “That’s weird.”

This was the first briefing for Sanders in 46 days, which has caused her to receive criticism from some for not having a consistent schedule. As IJR Blue previously reported, Trump had told Sanders in January that he did not want her to hold regular briefings due to what he believed was unfair treatment.

“The reason Sarah Sanders does not go to the ‘podium’ much anymore is that the press covers her so rudely & inaccurately, in particular certain members of the press,” tweeted Trump. “I told her not to bother, the word gets out anyway! Most will never cover us fairly & hence, the term, Fake News!”

The president has instead claimed that he will interact with the press directly, as opposed to a traditional briefing schedule by a press secretary. While Sanders has held two briefings this year, they have not been consistent.
