South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg shut down two hecklers who shouted “remember Sodom and Gomorrah” at him with a gracious response that’s getting viral attention.

At a campaign rally in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on Tuesday, Buttigieg’s supporters were the first to combat the protestors and drowned out heckling with chants of “Pete! Pete! Pete!”

The heckler was escorted out of the rally. Soon after, another protestor stood up and began chanting the same cries about the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is a biblical tale from the book of Genesis that describes five cities that were burned with fire and brimstone for their sins. The story has been interpreted by some to include homosexuality.

Buttigieg, an openly gay man who’s just as open about his devotion to Christianity, referred back to his faith in response to the hecklers.

“The good news is the condition of my soul is in the hands of God, but the Iowa caucuses are up to you,” he said.

Buttigieg has been very open about his sexuality on the campaign trail and how it relates to his faith. Most notably, he has hit Vice President Mike Pence multiple times for using Christianity as a reason for his previous support of anti-LGBTQ legislation.

“I don’t have a problem with religion, I’m religious, too,” Buttigieg said on “Ellen” last week. “I have a problem with religion being used as a justification to harm people and especially in the LGBTQ community so many people, even today, feel like they don’t belong.”

Buttigieg seemed proud of the heckler response moment and shared the video to his own Twitter account on Tuesday.
