2020 Democratic presidential primary candidate and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg was accused by his hometown’s police union of tailoring his response to a recent officer-involved shooting for “political gain.”

Following the fatal shooting of a man who is black by a police officer who is white in South Bend on June 16, Buttigieg — one of 23 Democrats running for the party’s presidential nomination — backed the idea of having a special prosecutor look into the incident.

He also said that he would ask the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division for an independent investigation.

A veteran member of the South Bend Police Department killed Eric Logan, 54, on June 16, stirring tensions between the town’s officials and racial minority communities.

In response, the South Bend Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #36 hammered the 2020 Democratic primary candidate in a statement, saying that his “focus on this incident is solely for his political gain” after the mayor sent an email out to supporters claiming the shooting showed that “all police work and all of American life takes place in the shadow of racism.”

The police union continued on to blast Buttigieg’s “disparaging remarks,” saying they “have already and will continue to have a detrimental effect” for officers of the law at home in South Bend and across the nation and that what he has said and done is “driving a wedge” between the police and “the community” they serve.

“Mayor Buttigieg has in no way unified the community,” the union added before pointing out that Buttigieg has focused on “one incident and one family” and has “yet to comment on” South Bend’s “largest mass shooting” in recent history.

The mayor has faced intense criticism at home and in the national spotlight for his handling of the incident.

As IJR Red previously reported, the ladies of “The View” blasted Buttigieg for his poor handling of a town hall regarding the shooting, with co-host Joy Behar saying that he needed to “fix what’s going on in South Bend” before trying to win a higher office.

This pathetic creature has NO chance to be nominated based on his inability to ACT as the Mayor of South Bend. Maybe in a few years he’ll be mature enough to run with the big boys. Not now.
