Stunning Poll Shows Only Half of America Fears Socialism, Thinks Government Takeover of Economy Is Bad

A new poll from Gallup found that the socialist ideas pushed by some Democrats are starting to stick in the United States.

Prominent left-leaning individuals like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) have been proud to wear the title of “democratic socialist,” touting far-left, big government policies like “Medicare for All” and the Green New Deal.

While Republicans often mock the socialist policies of people like Ocasio-Cortez, the socialist message is taking hold in the minds of many Americans.

Gallup’s new poll found that 43 percent of Americans said socialism would be a “good thing” for the country, with only 51 percent thinking socialism would be bad for the United States. In 1942, only 25 percent of Americans saw socialism as a good thing.

Many Americans have opened up to the idea of a government takeover of businesses. Gallup found that only 56 percent of Americans want to see the free market control higher education, and just 53 percent want to see the free market in control of health care.

One in three Americans wants to see the economy overall controlled by the government instead of the free market.

The friendly outlook on socialism in the United States is likely generated by the openness of socialist policies in the Democratic Party.

Gallup noted that economic areas where respondents were more open to a government takeover were areas that Democrats had already proposed policies that would do just that. Many of the 23 Democrats running for president in 2020 have promised government-run health care, tuition-free college, and environmental policies like the Green New Deal, which would heavily regulate businesses to protect the planet.

Although there has been a clear shift in openness toward socialism in the United States, President Donald Trump made a point to combat the narrative pushed by some Democrats that socialism is a good thing.

During his State of the Union address in February, Trump vowed that America “will never be a socialist country.”

Watch Trump’s comments:

“Here in the United States, we are alarmed by the new calls to adopt socialism in our country,” Trump said. “America was founded on liberty and independence and not government coercion, domination, and control. We are born free, and we will stay free. Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.”

While Trump may be confident, the trends found in the Gallup poll are evident throughout American politics, with Sanders consistently polling in second place in the crowded Democratic presidential primary race.

What a misleading headline and article that comes nowhere close to the nuanced conclusions of the poll. The poll doesn’t measure fear or ask if the government should take over the economy. And this line: “Many Americans have opened up to the idea of a government takeover of businesses” is followed by stats about higher education and health care???

Full blown socialism? Yeah, no kidding thats bad.

Certain social programs mixed with capitalism? That’s been proven to work wonderfully in many advanced countries.

If there is stupid results in a poll, thats probably because so many people keep are calling things socialism even though its not that now everyone is confused – which was the whole idea of calling it socialism when its just a couple social programs.
