Rand Paul Breaks With Justin Amash on Trump Impeachment, Pointing to Mueller Investigation Origins

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) says he disagrees with fellow libertarian Rep. Justin Amash’s (R-Mich.) claims that President Donald Trump should be impeached.

During an interview with HuffPost on Wednesday, Paul called the Mueller report the “antithesis of libertarianism,” breaking away from Amash’s comments and claiming that the origins of the report were the real problem.

“I actually think the libertarian position on the investigation is ― you know, libertarians, we’ve been very, very critical of the intelligence community having too much power, including congressman Amash has said, you know, really you should have to get a warrant before you get an American’s records,” Paul said.

As IJR News previously reported, Amash tweeted a thread on Saturday explaining his views and accusing Trump of impeachable conduct.

“Here are my principal conclusions: 1. Attorney General Barr has deliberately misrepresented Mueller’s report. 2. President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct. 3. Partisanship has eroded our system of checks and balances. 4. Few members of Congress have read the report,” tweeted Amash.

The lawmaker became the first House Republican to support impeachment, something that the president fired back on, calling Amash out for his statements.

“Never a fan of Justin Amash, a total lightweight who opposes me and some of our great Republican ideas and policies just for the sake of getting his name out there through controversy,” tweeted Trump. “Anyway, how do you Obstruct when there is no crime and, in fact, the crimes were committed by the other side? Justin is a loser who sadly plays right into our opponents hands!”

Paul also pointed out that the Mueller investigation was “an abuse of intelligence power consistent with what libertarians have been complaining about for a long time.” He also said he supported Amash’s proposed amendment “which says you have to have a warrant before you target Americans because foreign intelligence warrants have a lower standard.”

Although Amash is in the minority of Republicans who support impeachment, the lawmaker is reportedly considering a third-party run against Trump.

Amash is no more a Republican than Pelosi or Shumer. Hopefully he will be defeated in the next election along with all other democrats.

1. Barr did deliberately mislead the findings in the report as evidenced in Trump’s tweet.
2. Obstruction of Justice was a charge in the impeachment hearings of Nixon & Clinton.
3. No doubt partisanship has eroded checks & balances.
4. Any member of Congress that claims “no collusion. no obstruction” has not read the Mueller report –or is joining Barr in deliberately mislead the findings.
