Republican Karen Handel Defeats Dem Jon Ossoff in Georgia Special Election

Republican Karen Handel has defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff in the special election in Georgia’s 6th District. The New York Times declared Handel the winner with 52.5 percent of the vote with 81 percent of precincts reporting.

The race in Georgia was the most expensive House race of all time with more than $50 million spent. The race was to the elect the replacement for President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price.

President Trump had personally gotten involved in the race, having campaigned alongside Handel and tweeting about the race seven times.

Handel’s win is a huge blow to Democrats. While Price won the district in November with over 61 percent of the vote, Trump only defeated Clinton in the district by just over one point.

Democrats viewed the seat as their best chance to flip a House seat during the 2017 special election cycle.
