Republican leaders in Washington, D.C., are honoring those who serve to protect the American people, as many have paid the “ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.”

National Police Week kicked off with a candlelight vigil held at the National Mall on Monday to honor 371 fallen officers.

Among the several Republicans praising officers during National Police Week include Vice President Mike Pence.

“God bless our fallen heroes, their families, & all of our courageous law enforcement today, & every day!” Pence tweeted Monday.

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) honored law enforcement’s “bravery & sacrifice” while specifically thanking David Bailey and Crystal Griner for their “heroic actions” during a congressional baseball practice in 2017 in which a gunman shot Scalise, resulting in nerve damage in his left leg.

Scalise has made it clear that surviving the shooting has only strengthened his support for the Second Amendment, as IJR Red reported.

“Our rights come to us from God, not lawmakers,” he said at the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) annual event. “It’s God who gave us our rights. Our Founding Fathers believed in that.”

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) expressed his thankfulness to “the men and woman that dedicate their lives to protect our communities each day.”

“We honor those who hold the thin blue line and stand in the gap to protect and serve,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) tweeted Tuesday. “We remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty. Thank you for your service.”

“Supporting law enforcement shouldn’t be a political issue because law enforcement officers make sacrifices every single day in the line of duty, and some of them pay the ultimate price to protect our communities, so thank you for your service and your sacrifice,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said in a tribute video.

Other Republicans joined in to honor police officers:

President Donald Trump is expected to attend the 38th National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service on Wednesday. He recently expressed his gratitude for law enforcement at the NRA event.

“In this admin, we’ll always stand with heroes of law enforcement,” Trump declared at the time. “And we’re going to protect them, just like they protect us.”

Shame on you for the false and misleading language of your headline: “Republicans Honor Law Enforcement’s ‘Heroic Actions’ for Police Week”. Our officers were not being honored by “Republicans”; they were being honored by AMERICANS, of both parties. Many of the hundreds of thousands of officers and others marking the occasion are Democrats.

This is the first Police Week that I can remember where it was nearly 100% supported by Republicans. The previous Administration under the abysmal “leadership” of #44 had such disdain for the police, the Secret Service and the military that their presence was barely noticed.
