Rick Santorum Smacks DNC for Blocking Fox from Dem Primary Debate: ‘What Are They Afraid Of?’

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is excluding Fox News from hosting a Democratic primary debate for the 2020 race, and former GOP Sen. Rick Santorum is wondering, “What are they afraid of?”

DNC Chairman Tom Perez announced on Wednesday that the reason Fox News allegedly buried the Stormy Daniels story was to boost President Donald Trump’s 2016 chances.

Therefore, Perez said Fox News has an “inappropriate relationship” with the Trump administration and is “not in a position to host a fair and neutral debate for our candidates,” as IJR Red reported.

Responding to the DNC blocking Fox News, CNN political analyst Kirsten Powers stressed during Wednesday’s CNN segment that while Fox News closely connects with the sitting president, there are still “good journalists there” and “I think they would be smart” to hold a debate.

“It sounds like the kind of thing that pleases, you know, the liberal part, or the left, you know, far left part of the Democratic Party and sort of makes them feel good, but just in terms of, you know, trying to sway voters who could be reached, it seems shortsighted, no?” CNN host Anderson Cooper asked Santorum.

“What are they afraid of?” Santorum responded. He continued:

“I mean, as Kirsten mentioned, there’s legit journalists over there. You mentioned it, too. There’s no question that there is an opinion side to Fox and you’re right, they very much cheer for Trump and put a spin out there, but there’s also a journalist side.”

“And those are the folks that in my presidential debates those were the people who asked the questions and let me assure you they were really tough questions, they were as tough as the ones I got on CNN,” Santorum added.

DNC’s Perez responds to criticism over the plan

The announcement immediately drew criticism from reporters, as well as President Donald Trump, who said he’d give the treatment right back to other news organization who show bias.

“Democrats just blocked [Fox News] from holding a debate,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Good, then I think I’ll do the same thing with the Fake News Networks and the Radical Left Democrats in the General Election debates!”

Appearing on CNN late Wednesday, Perez defended the DNC’s plan.

“This is all about two things … Number one, we wanted to maximize the number of people who see our candidates because I think what we’re fighting for commands the respect and support of the majority of the American people,” Perez said. “… Our second goal, though, is to make sure that every debate that takes place that I have a hundred percent assurance that everybody is treated fairly.”

He noted his respect for Fox News’ Chris Wallace but said: “At the highest levels at Fox News they have infiltrated the news site.”

CNN’s Chris Cuomo tested Perez for seemingly “asking for more division in a campaign season that’s supposed to be about trying to find ways to have less division.”

“I see it differently, Chris,” Perez responded.

Perez’s announcement sparked criticism from several reporters, including Fox News’ Bret Baier who said blocking his network is “really a shame” while noting “we will continue to cover this 2020 race fairly.”
