San Juan Mayor Responds to Trump’s Criticism: ‘I Am Not Going to Be Distracted by Small Comments’

Mayor of San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz took a moment on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” to respond to President Donald Trump’s damning Saturday morning tweetstorm, saying the relief efforts — and her plea for help — should not be “about petty comments.”

Talking with host Joy Reid, Cruz said she was simply “asking for help” and not “saying anything nasty about the president.”

The San Juan mayor continued, saying the three-star general deployed to Puerto Rico has confessed “he doesn’t have enough troops, and he doesn’t have enough equipment of what he needs to get the situation under control,” echoing the sentiments Cruz made prior to the general’s arrival.

“This isn’t about me. This isn’t about anyone,” Cruz opined. “This is about lives that are being lost.”

Reid kept on, though, asking what Cruz thought of Trump’s attack on the people of Puerto Rico, saying he thought they were too lazy to help themselves.

Cruz outlined examples of what she saw happening in her community — people who lost everything coming out to help each other.

“So, again, and I can say this to you with a smile,” Cruz said. “I am not going to be distracted by small comments, by politics, by petty issues. This is one goal, and it is to save lives. That’s all that matters.”

Pointing out that President Trump and First Lady Melania were scheduled to visit the island Tuesday, Reid asked if Cruz would meet with them during their visit.

“What I would really like him to do,” Cruz said, “is not just have a helicopter ride over to survey areas, just to go out into the towns where people are drinking out of creeks, or the towns where all the cows and the dead people are together.”

“One can visit as a photo op, or one can visit to make sure things get done the right way,” she concluded. “I’m hopeful.”
