Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) got a quick reminder that Democrats run the city of San Francisco after he called the price of living in the city a “disgrace.”
The senator is well into his second bid for the White House, but he had other housing situations on his mind on Wednesday. Sanders posted a video to Twitter showing the shoddy living conditions of some residents of San Francisco, California.
The video depicts several families sharing small apartments just so they can afford to pay the rent each month.
Sanders shared the video of his wife, Dr. Jane Sanders, visiting the apartments and called the situation a “disgrace.”
Watch Sanders’ video:
Housing is so unaffordable in San Francisco that entire families are forced to live in 6'x10' rooms and share a kitchen with 30 other families.

It didn’t take long before Sanders was hit with reminders that San Francisco is a city that has been run by Democrats for decades. Several took to Twitter to call out Sanders for the video.
Brought to you by the Democrats. https://t.co/vMkv0in7wA

Yeah, San Francisco hasn't tried to implement left wing policies yet. https://t.co/NtDVQYqj99

Others noted that the Democratic leadership of San Francisco doesn’t end at the city level. California has a Democratic-run legislature, governor, and Senators, as well. In fact, one of San Francisco’s members of Congress is the most powerful Democrat in the nation, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Bernie with all due respect this is the outcome of state and local policies designed to soak the rich but really crush the middle class and eviscerates the poor…it would be like this nationwide to fund your climate change proposal https://t.co/nm9GZQ3V5h

San Francisco has:
– A Democratic Mayor
– A Democratic City Council
– Democratic State Representatives
– Democratic State Senators
– A Democratic Congresswoman (Nancy Pelosi, if you know her)
– Two Democratic Senators
– A Democratic Governor
…do you see a pattern? https://t.co/Hre2Xv6xv9

Despite the fact that Democratic leadership is responsible for the successes and failures of San Francisco, Sanders is somehow hoping that this video will help bolster his presidential bid.
Sanders has been consistently polling in second place for the Democratic presidential primary, behind current frontrunner and former Vice President Joe Biden.
While Sanders is trying to set himself apart, affordable housing may not be the issue to choose.
As IJR previously reported, several prominent 2020 Democrats — including Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) — have already released extensive plans for addressing the high costs of housing.
Their solutions range from a tax credit for those who pay over 30% of their income in rent to a $500 billion investment in the construction of public housing.
