Sandy Hook Promise, a non-profit organization led by family members of children massacred at a Connecticut elementary school in 2012, released a chilling public awareness advertisement for its violence prevention campaign on Wednesday.

The advertisement, called “Back to School Essentials,” shows children using standard back to school items like scissors, pencils and sneakers as they attempt to flee from a gunman.

“These new socks? They can be a real lifesaver,” said one girl, as she tied a pair of long white socks around the bloodied leg of another girl as a tourniquet.

The advertisement, which aired during NBC’s Today Show and had tens of thousands of online views on Wednesday morning, aims to bring awareness to Sandy Hook Promise’s school violence prevention program “Know the Signs,” which teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and intervene to prevent mass shootings.

A gunman killed 26 children and educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where the non-profit organization is based, in the deadliest public school shooting in U.S. History on Dec. 14, 2012.

Australia was able to eliminate their mass shooting epidemic in 1996, why can’t we. Background checks won’t do it, kids used their parents weapons for killing others. NRA is a strong lobby just like pharmaceutical, oil, food & beverage. It’s all about money not about peoples welfare and wellbeing. 2nd amendment is 300 years old time for an update, Its states for militia purposes not personal. You’re a real fool if you think that assault rifle will protect you against the government’s heavy arms, tanks, airplanes, assault helicopters hellfire missiles, etc. Just go to the movies or watch Netflix everything… Read more »

“I don’t know, General. There is definitely truth in your answer to the problem, but NO other country in the World?? Would you like to live in the Middle East, where if you are a woman you are a little above a dog in status? I always have problems believing in answers that compare our Country with other Countries.” Nancy Assaf There is a direct relation between the quantity of guns and the total number of deaths by gun, no matter what rhetoric the gun rights people throw at us. There are some pretty amazing graphs that show this relationship.… Read more »

“No matter what gun control laws you pass, it will never stop the shootings.” Jule Day Westcott

I am confused.

If NO other country in the world has such a gun death problem as we do, what makes US so special?

Answer: the total, unprecedented mass of between 300-400 MILLION guns and lax gun control.

IF these parents and teachers were really serious about protecting their children from the dangers of a mass shooter, WHY haven’t they even considered contacting the National Rifle Association and inquiring about the Association’s School Shield Program? Is it better to just sit and WISH something could be done; waste money on film and videos which most will either ignore or forget in 10 minutes; OR, get the help from an organization which has been at the forefront of school safety issues for 10+ YEARS? This is NOT rocket science; but it is more important because it has a direct… Read more »

Start at the beginning of the problem – people. We have an immoral, disconnected segment of society that should never, ever hold a gun. That’s where prevention begins. Parents should be teaching their children the danger of strangers and kindness to other people. Years ago students brought guns to school and showed them to their principal who then bought out his gin to compare. Nobody was shot. There was a moral society then. As a teacher, we were trained to keep the children back out of the way of harm, never by a window ‘armed’ with scissors and colored pencils.… Read more »

Sad, sad, sad. When I think of the childhood I had vs the one children are experiencing today. It’s the adults fault. How are we going to fix it. By the 3rd graders presently in Congress, I’m afraid not. Be aware of who you’re voting for. We can fix this. We changed air travel forever in about 3 months. It’s been 7 years since Sandy Hook. Sufficient time to install metal detectors and security guards at every school? Too expensive? Not really. Does it work? According to school administrators in some of the worst inner city schools, yes it does.… Read more »
