House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is claiming that his opening remarks during Thursday’s House Intelligence hearing with acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire were meant to be “part in parody,” as he’s being called out for them.
The hearing is surrounding a whistleblower report on President Donald Trump’s previous call with the Ukrainian president.
The White House released the transcript of the phone call between the two leaders after increased impeachment pressure by House Democrats and the House speaker’s launch of a formal impeachment inquiry. The whistleblower’s complaint was also released to the public on Thursday ahead of the hearing.
Schiff offered a “more dramatic” version of the president’s words during his opening statement at Thursday’s hearing. In part, Schiff suggested:
“In essence, what the President Trump communicates is this: We’ve been very good to your country. Very good. No other country has done as much as we have. But you know what, I don’t see much reciprocity here. You know what I mean? I hear what you want. I have a favor I want from you through. And I’m going to say this only seven times, so you better listen good. I want you to make up dirt on my political opponent, understand?”
“And don’t call me again,” Schiff added. “I’ll call you when you’ve done what I asked.”

In opening statement, Rep. Schiff makes up dialogue to represent what Trump said to Zelensky. A rough transcript of the president's words exists, and is available, but Schiff's version is more dramatic. pic.twitter.com/f7gS4KIPge

In the unredacted transcript of the July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, it, in part, reads that Trump said:
“There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it … It sounds horrible to me.”
Schiff was quickly called out for his remarks.
“Adam Schiff lied for TWO years about a phony Russia collusion hoax. He promised evidence that didn’t exist,” Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said, adding, “The American people won’t fall for his lies about [Donald Trump] today either!”
Adam Schiff lied for TWO years about a phony Russia collusion hoax.
He promised evidence that didn't exist.
The American people won't fall for his lies about @realDonaldTrump today either!

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) slammed Schiff for his “disturbing and outrageous … improvised fake dialogue between President Trump and President Zelenskyy.:
“We should focus on the facts,” Stefanik added.
It is disturbing and outrageous that Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff opens up a hearing of this importance with improvised fake dialogue between President Trump and President Zelenskyy. We should focus on the facts.

Schiff was also labeled as “desperate” for “making up quotes and attributing them to” the president, as Fox News contributor Jason Chaffetz tweeted.
Check out the reactions below:
Dear Chairman Schiff, by making up quotes and attributing them to POTUS demonstrates how desperate you are

Schiff knows that a lot of people watching will think that's actually what the transcript said. It's not. In fact, the WHOLE POINT is that the transcript DOESN'T say what Schiff just said it said.

Adam Schiff literally just made up his own transcript of @realDonaldTrump talking with the Urkrainian President
Rather than reading from the actual transcript he made up a new one, conveying …
He created a new transcript. What a HACK!

I thought I'd seen everything, but after Schiff's blatant lies in his opening statement, even I am shocked this morning.

OMG, Schiff just claimed that President Trump asked the Ukrainian President to "make up dirt on Joe Biden!!!"
Holy sh*t. Schiff just LIED about what Trump said in the record!
— Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) September 26, 2019
Did Adam Schiff read the same memo?!

Adam Schiff needs to censured for this gross misuse of a political chairmanship.
He doesn't belong in charge of any committee if he has to blatantly make up lies
How do you even do that when we can all read? https://t.co/JmaQLTagec

Adam Schiff just made up what President Trump said during his call with Ukrainian President Zelensky

Schiff tried to backtrack, as he suggested that his opening comments were meant to be “at least part in parody.”
“The fact that that’s not clear is a separate problem in it of itself,” he said.
Check out the video below:
When Adam Schiff was confronted about his made-up version of the Ukraine transcript, he admitted it was "parody."
Democrats KNOW President Trump didn't do anything wrong, so they're resorting to making things up to trick you! pic.twitter.com/opCVbBX1YC

As IJR previously reported, Schiff claimed on Wednesday that the transcript of Trump’s call is “a class mafia-like shakedown of a foreign leader.”
Maguire is expected to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday following the House’s hearing.
