Schumer Responds: Trump Always Seems to Politicize and Divide America After National Tragedy

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) responded Wednesday morning to President Donald Trump’s flurry of pointed tweets blaming, in part, an immigration program sponsored for by the New York senator for Tuesday’s terrorist attack.

“I have always believed and continue to believe that immigration is good for America,” Schumer said in a statement posted to Twitter. “President Trump, instead of politicizing and dividing America, which he always seems to do at times of national tragedy, should be focusing on the real solution — anti-terrorism funding — which he proposed cutting in his most recent budget.”

Schumer then followed up his statement with another jab at the president:

Shortly after the Las Vegas massacre that killed 58 people and injured more than 500, Schumer was one of the first senators to call for stricter gun control in response. “As much as we might hope to we cannot banish evil from the earth, Congress can’t do that, the president can’t do that,” he said from the Senate floor a day after the shooting.

“What Congress can do, what Congress must do, is pass laws to keep our citizens safe,” Schumer added.

The president blasted Schumer on Twitter Wednesday morning for his role in pushing the “Diversity Visa Lottery Program,” an immigration program that the suspect in Tuesday’s attack used to enter the country.

The suspect, identified by officials as 29-year-old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, was shot by New York police and taken into custody. Saipov reportedly entered the U.S. in 2010 from Uzbekistan under a program that gives visas to people from countries with few immigrants to the U.S.
