Stacey Abrams’ State of the Union response took a fraction of the time that President Donald Trump spent on his speech, but Democrats were in agreement that the former Georgia gubernatorial candidate stole the show.
“Stacey Abrams showed the president what real leadership was last night,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told “CBS This Morning” on Wednesday. “She was compassionate, she was caring, she talked about the plight of her family, the plight of the American family. She knows the American dream is out of reach for too many people and fading for others.”

Abrams began her 11-minute address with a story about her childhood and her father, and she proceeded to tie it into the policies and politics that Democrats are currently pushing.
“Our power and strength as Americans lives in our hard work and our belief in more,” Abrams said Tuesday night. “My family understood firsthand that while success is not guaranteed, we live in a nation where opportunity is possible. But we do not succeed alone.”
“Stacey Abrams achieved in a matter of minutes something Donald Trump failed to do in over an hour — to embrace and give voice to the spirit and core values that make America great,” former Vice President Joe Biden tweeted late Tuesday night.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was in agreement.
“[Abrams] did a masterful job,” she wrote on Twitter following the address. “A perfect counter-weight to [Trump’s] out-of-touch speech.”
We just finished watching the #AbramsAddress here in my office at the Capitol, and we’re all in agreement: @StaceyAbrams did a masterful job. A perfect counter-weight to @realDonaldTrump’s out-of-touch speech. #SOTU

Abrams mentioned multiple issues in her speech that Trump failed to, such as climate change, gun violence, and LGBTQ issues. Democrats took notice. Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) thanked Abrams for mentioning gun violence.
Thank you to @StaceyAbrams for calling on Congress to take action on gun violence.
President Trump’s party is in the minority in the House because Americans are fed up with Congress’ refusal to take action on gun reform. President Trump failed to address it. #SOTU

The former gubernatorial candidate did mention Trump, first blaming him for the 35-day partial government shutdown. But Abrams ended her speech on a hopeful note for the president.
“So even as I am very disappointed by the president’s approach to our problems, I still don’t want him to fail,” she said. “But we need him to tell the truth and to respect his duties and respect the extraordinary diversity that defines America.”
