On Thursday, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel revealed the sheriff’s deputy who was assigned to protect Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School stood outside the building as the shooting, which left 17 students and staff dead, occurred.
Israel said he had suspended Deputy Scot Peterson without pay, who later decided to resign from his position.
It has also been revealed Peterson had interacted with suspected shooter Nikolas Cruz in the past.

The Washington Post reports a social services agency investigation into Cruz took place in 2016. Investigators approached Peterson, who “refused to share any information … regarding [an] incident that took place with” Cruz.
Israel was “devastated” that Peterson, who was in uniform and armed, did not take action for “upward of four minutes” while Cruz was on his killing spree.
“Devastated. Sick to my stomach,” he said. “There are no words. These families lost their children. We lost coaches. I’ve been to the funerals. I’ve been to the homes where they sit in shiva. I’ve been to the vigils.”
