In one of Saturday Night Lives more tasteless moments, cast member Pete Davidson mocked Republican Congressional candidate and war hero Dan Crenshaw for sporting an eye patch.
Crenshaw is a Navy SEAL who served the country in five overseas deployments. During his third deployment in 2012, Crenshaw was hit by an IED blast that claimed his right eye and severely damaged his left eye.
While that injury would have sidelined most Americans, Crenshaw wasn’t finished. After he regained vision in his left eye, he returned to military service and completed two more deployments.
Crenshaw retired from the military in 2016 after 10 years of service and quickly earned his Masters degree from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
Now, he is running for Congress as the Republican candidate in Texas’s second district.
Although most Americans are in awe of Crenshaw’s fighting spirit and dedication to the country, SNL couldn’t care about anything but his personal appearance and took the time to mock the war hero for wearing an eye patch.
In a bit where Davidson analyzed some “really gross people” running for office, he mocked the appearance of several Republican candidates and one Democrat so he could “look fair.”
“Dan Crenshaw, no hold on. You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie. I’m sorry. I know he lost his eye in war or whatever.”
Even the crowd didn’t seem on board with Davidson’s attack on the Navy SEAL’s appearance, groaning as he made the comments.
Several people from across the spectrum found the bit to be completely tasteless and took the time to condemn SNL for running the bit.
Totally cheap, disgusting and classless of SNL to have Pete Davidson mock Dan Crenshaw for wearing an eye patch…then giggle that he was injured in the line of duty.@DanCrenshawTX is a Navy SEAL and hero who lost his eye in an IED attack in Afghanistan. pic.twitter.com/7VbMohQ3t2

This is absolutely disgusting. The guy did three combat tours as a Navy SEAL. Not funny in any way, shape or form. https://t.co/c7IO308HXn

In a sad attempt to try an insult Republican candidates for their appearances, SNL ended up insulting any American who appreciates the sacrifice heroes like Crenshaw made so that people like Pete Davidson can make cheap jokes in the safety of a New York studio.
As for Crenshaw, Cook Political Report lists his seat as “likely Republican.” If anything, these comments just put a spotlight on Crenshaw’s candidacy in the last few days before voters hit the polls.
