Authorities in Indiana say a 2-year-old boy died under devastating conditions after what investigators describe as prolonged neglect inside his own home.

According to the New York Post, police in Tell City responded on March 31 after a 911 call reported a child who was not breathing. When officers arrived, they found Erik Reichard unresponsive on the living room floor.

“The child was blue and pale,” a detective wrote in a probable cause affidavit. “I could tell based on my training and experience that the child had been deceased for several hours.”

Officers attempted CPR, but the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, Erik’s father, Trevor Reichard-Hayes, told dispatchers he called for help after his wife, Katherine Carter, discovered the child unresponsive.

The couple reportedly said they had last seen their son alive around 11 p.m. the night before — more than 14 hours before contacting emergency services.

The condition of the home raised immediate concerns.

Police described the residence as unsanitary, with feces found on the floors of the children’s rooms and diapers scattered throughout. Authorities also reported drywall pieces, paint chips, dirt, and insect infestations inside the home.

A training toilet filled with waste appeared not to have been cleaned for an extended period, according to investigators.

Should parents facing neglect charges be held accountable for a child's death?

In contrast, the parents’ bedroom was described as clean and orderly.

Erik’s physical condition was equally alarming.

Authorities said the toddler weighed just 15 pounds at the time of his death and had dozens of sores and insect bites across his body. Investigators said the child’s mother told them he had been eating parts of diapers.

An autopsy later found that the boy had ingested materials consistent with diaper contents, drywall, paint chips, and other debris found in the home.

Officials determined his death was caused by severe malnutrition and dehydration due to neglect.

Two other children were also living in the home. Both were removed by the Indiana Department of Child Services, and one was hospitalized for severe malnutrition and dehydration.

Following the investigation, Reichard-Hayes and Carter were arrested and charged with murder, along with multiple counts related to neglect.

Court proceedings are ongoing, with upcoming hearings scheduled in the case.
