In the highly watched Tennessee Senate race between Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R) and former governor Phil Bredesen (D), each candidate has their share of celebrity endorsements.
Much attention was brought to Bredesen’s campaign after singer Taylor Swift endorsed him, however, Blackburn just received an endorsement from a popular figure that may have more sway than Swift.
In a new ad posted on her Twitter account, Darrell Waltrip, a three-time NASCAR Cup champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer, gave his support for Blackburn.
“I’m made a career out of going fast and turning left,” Waltrip states. “And that works on the track, but not so good in Washington.”
Waltrip goes to say Bredesen will “go along to get along” with Democrats on taxes, immigration, and Obamacare.

Phil Bredesen will go along to get along with Washington liberals every time. @AllWaltrip wants his next Senator to represent conservative values, & I'm the only one Tennesseans can count on to do that. pic.twitter.com/V6jFkeYjGK

The endorsement is in stark contrast to why Swift endorsed the former governor in a post on her Instagram:
I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.
“I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives,” she added.
Real Clear Politics reports after Swift’s endorsement, most polling shows Blackburn leads Bredesen by a 6.5 point average.
