‘I AGREE With AOC’: Cruz Teams Up With Ocasio-Cortez on New Proposal in Rare Moment of Bipartisanship

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) have agreed to team up on a new policy proposal.

The policy would go after politicians who become lobbyists soon after leaving office. This is extremely common, with a Public Citizen report claiming 60% of former members from the 115th Congress found jobs at lobbying firms.

Ocasio-Cortez explained her issue with the practice in a tweet on Wednesday, saying that she didn’t believe the connections made in Congress should be used for a paycheck right after they leave.

“If you are a member of Congress + leave, you shouldn’t be allowed to turn right around & leverage your service for a lobbyist check,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “I don’t think it should be legal at ALL to become a corporate lobbyist if you’ve served in Congress. At minimum there should be a long wait period.”

Cruz replied, saying that he agreed with the congresswoman.

“Here’s something I don’t say often: on this point, I AGREE with [Ocasio-Cortez],” tweeted Cruz. “Indeed, I have long called for a LIFETIME BAN on former Members of Congress becoming lobbyists. The Swamp would hate it, but perhaps a chance for some bipartisan cooperation?”

While Ocasio-Cortez has been extremely critical of Republican lawmakers in the past, she asked Cruz if he wanted to work with her on sponsoring a bill.

“[Ted Cruz] if you’re serious about a clean bill, then I’m down,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “Let’s make a deal. If we can agree on a bill with no partisan snuck-in clauses, no poison pills, etc – just a straight, clean ban on members of Congress becoming paid lobbyists – then I’ll co-lead the bill with you.”

In a rare show of bipartisanship, Cruz agreed to work with her to create the proposal. If the ban is passed, it could alter the way lobbying firms are run.

Cathy is confused.

Term limits are applied in each election, if the voters do their job right.
