With the upcoming State of the Union scheduled for January 29 and no end in sight for the partial government shutdown, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) wrote to the president and suggested moving his address. Now, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is slamming “terrified” Pelosi for being afraid of President Donald Trump speaking directly to the American people.
In the letter to President Trump, Pelosi remarked how due to “security concerns,” the president should consider pushing back the date of the State of the Union or provide it in written form to Congress on the set date, as IJR News reported.
She then told CNN it was a “housekeeping matter in the Congress of the United States, so we can honor the responsibility of the invitation we extended to the President.”
“He can make it from the Oval Office if he wants,” she added.
Despite Pelosi’s statement on furloughed workers within the U.S. Secret Service under the Department of Homeland Security, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said the department is “fully prepared” to secure the event.
When asked by a reporter about the postponing of Trump’s upcoming State of the Union, Cruz swiped at Pelosi for being “terrified” of her “extreme left-wing base” and that “the position of Congressional Democrats in this shutdown is objectively unreasonable.”
He went on to explain how top Democrats have previously voted for a wall along the southern border.
“They have right now shut the government down to stop 234 miles of border wall,” Cruz said. “I don’t know how you explain that you voted in favor of 350 miles but you shut the government down to stop 234 miles. That is incoherent.”
“The honest answer: It’s not a substantive disagreement; it’s that they’re terrified of their extreme left wing, who hates Trump. And that’s why we’re having a shutdown.”
The Texan senator explained Pelosi doesn’t want the State of the Union because it’s “an enormous platform for the president to speak directly to the American people, and she doesn’t want people focusing on the substance of this issue.”
“She wants their information to come from the mainstream media rather than the president,” he added.
“The president has said he’s willing to compromise; he’s willing to negotiate but we need to secure the border. The president’s right on that. Their position is not defensible so of course she’s trying to hide from the cameras and I don’t think we should let her.”

As IJR Red reported, other Republicans have called for President Trump to make his way to the Senate for his State of the Union address if Pelosi continues to “poke” at the president.
