Up to 10 Dead in Texas High School Shooting, Explosives Found in Area Around School

UPDATE [5/18/18, 12:30 p.m. ET]:

Eight to 10 people have been killed and 12 injured in the shooting at Santa Fe High School, according to local officials.

Most of the victims are students. One Santa Fe Independent School District police officer was critically injured in the shooting.

Police have also warned that explosive devices have been found on the scene and in the surrounding area.

Local law enforcement officials are working to safely remove the explosives, and advised residents to call 911 if they see any suspicious items in the area.

Two suspects believed to be students are in custody.

UPDATE [5/18/18, 11:04 a.m. ET]:

As many as eight deaths have been reported in the Santa Fe high school shooting, according to local news outlets.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed multiple casualties on Twitter. He said the situation has been contained and is no longer active. 

The primary suspect is believed to be a student.

President Donald Trump tweeted his support for the victims.

UPDATE [5/18/18, 10:38 a.m. ET]:

Injuries have been confirmed by local police on the scene of a shooting at Santa Fe high school in Texas. The number and extent of the injuries are still unknown.

The Santa Fe Independent School District issued a statement confirming the reports:

“This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The situation is active but has been contained. There have been confirmed injuries. Details will be released as we receive updated information.”

Officers began transporting students to a nearby gym to be reunited with their parents.

UPDATE [5/18/18, 10:01 a.m. ET]:

One person is in custody in connection with the reports of a shooting at Santa Fe high school on Friday, according to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.

Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trouchesset said officers are still working to determine whether there is more than one shooter.

The Texas Department of Transportation has informed drivers to avoid the highway near the school.

Nearby Dickinson Independent School District confirmed that schools there have entered protected mode as a precaution.

Santa Fe high school remains on lockdown. The school is located about 30 miles southeast of Houston.

A spokesman for Harris County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they are investigating an active shooter situation at Santa Fe high school in Texas.

It is unclear whether any injuries have been reported.

The Santa Fe Independent School District posted the following message to its website:

“This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The district has initiated a lockdown. We will send out additional information as soon as it is available.”

No suspect has been identified.
