Newsmax Media CEO Chris Ruddy ignited a political firestorm on Monday when he suggested that President Donald Trump is considering “terminating” Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the man heading the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
Ruddy, a friend and confidante of President Trump, told “PBS Newshour”:
“I think he’s considering perhaps terminating the special counsel. I think he’s weighing that option. I think it’s pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently.”
Ruddy added that it would be a “significant mistake” to fire Mueller, even though there is “no justification” for the special counsel in the first place.
Citing a “source close to Trump,” CNN’s Jim Acosta later reported the president “is being advised by many people” not to fire the special prosecutor.
The unconfirmed reports literally set off an avalanche of speculation and reactions from influencers.
However, plenty of Trump fans argued Mueller needs to go or that he's compromised due to his personal relationship with former FBI Director James Comey.
As usual, we’ll all have to wait and see what Trump actually does.
