David Greenplate is the Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 120 in Elkton, Maryland. Every September, Pack 120 sponsors a push car race for all of the Packs in the district.
As with many scouting events, those who participate in the push car race can earn a special patch — one designed specifically for the race each year.
Greenplate, a six-year veteran Cubmaster, explained to Independent Journal Review how this year's design happened to feature a quotation from Secretary of Defense James Mattis:
"I pick a quote to put in the patch each year. Usually racing related or inspirational. But after [Mattis] said that in the interview I was so impressed by it. It is my last year doing this, so I chose his words.
I just think it's a badass American thing to say, and we have been lacking such bravado for a while now."
So which Mattis-ism did Greenplate choose?
But he didn't stop there. Greenplate was so moved by Mattis's comments that he sent a patch to the secretary of defense himself.
And then he got a letter back...
The note reads:
Thanks for the patch. My best to you and your lads.
Sincerely, Jim Mattis
Mattis also sent a photo to the entire Pack with the following inscription:
To the Elkton Cub Scouts,
Stay true, stay strong!
Best wishes, Jim Mattis
Greenplate's boys, one of whom is still a member of Pack 120, thought that was pretty cool of him — and we're inclined to agree.
