A former aide to Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) alleges that he made sexual advances toward her three times while she was working for him at his Detroit district office between 1997 and 2005.

In 1997, Deanna Maher, then in her 50s, said she was invited by Conyers to Washington for a conference. She soon realized that she had to stay in his two-bedroom hotel suite, according to CNN:

“So I got into bed and all of the sudden, John Conyers walked into my bedroom. If you can imagine how ridiculous I looked, I put on my suit coat. I had a suit coat on in bed. I was shaking. I was absolutely shaking. And he took off his clothes and then I figured it out: 'Oh my God. What did I do? How stupid. At my age, that I walked in and got myself into a situation like that.' So, it was just silent with the TV on and I'm sitting there in bed with my suit coat on, shaking. He didn't touch me, so he just stormed out of the room because I didn't say anything.”

After Conyers left, she locked the door. The next morning, Maher said she got her own room.

Maher said the second incident occurred in 1998, when Conyers drove her to the airport. While allegedly reaching over to grope Maher, his driving became so erratic that police pulled him over. He was given a warning.

The third incident allegedly occurred in 1999, when Maher helped Conyers host an event in a Detroit suburb:

"He walked up on a stage, and this was in front of a lot of people, and he walked up to act like he was whispering in my ear something about the town hall meeting and he stuck his hand up my dress, and whispered in my ear 'Wow, you've got great looking legs.' I don't know if anyone else there saw it. I don't know. But if anyone did see it, no one would report it.

Maher called the multiple allegations on Capitol Hill a “system” because of “how these members protect each other,” according to the CNN report.

Maher said she did not report Conyers out of fear of losing her job.
