The abrupt firing of NBC “Today” show host Matt Lauer over allegations of sexual abuse shocked his colleagues Wednesday, along with an untold number of Lauer's fans.

Fox News personality Geraldo Rivera is apparently among them.

Rivera took to Twitter to offer what amounts to a bizarre defense of Lauer, and the accusations that led to his firing:

Fox News said in a statement to the Indianapolis Star:

Geraldo's tweets do not reflect the views of FOX News or its management. We were troubled by his comments and are addressing them with him.

And Rivera?

Like Lauer, former CBS personality Charlie Rose, actor Ken Spacey, comedian Louis C.K., and a growing list of others, he apologized, only after having been called out:

Can't make it up. Don't have to.
